Who can get Essentials Broadband?

It’s available for new and existing Shell Energy customers but you’ll need to be receiving one of the following benefits to qualify:

  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit

How do I get Essentials Broadband?

If you’re a new customer, you’ll need to call us on 0330 175 9942 and ask about our Essentials packages. If you’re an existing Shell Energy Broadband customer, simply call us on 0330 094 9181 and quote “upgrade” when prompted. Lines are open between 8am and 7pm Monday to Friday, and between 9am and 4pm on Saturdays.

How do I register?

At the moment we’re only taking orders over the phone, so if you’re new to Shell Energy Broadband call us on 0330 175 9942 to place your order.


As part of the application process, we’ll ask you to confirm some basic information including your name, surname, date of birth and postcode. This information is shared with the Department of Work & Pensions (DWP) to confirm your eligibility. We won’t receive any information about the benefits you get - only confirmation that you are in receipt of the eligible benefits.

Can I switch if I already have Shell Energy Broadband or Home Phone?

Yes. Call us on 0330 094 9181 and quote “upgrade” when prompted.

Will I need a credit check?

As part of our standard business policy, we carry out full credit checks on all new applications for broadband or home phone packages. Experian, an independent credit agency, undertakes these on our behalf.

If you’re new to Shell Energy Broadband, we’ll carry out a credit check as part of your application.

If you’re an existing Shell Energy Broadband customer, we won’t carry out a new credit check.

What happens after 12 months?

You can continue with your Essentials Broadband or Home Phone package providing you still receive one or more of the qualifying benefits and the plan is still available.

If not, you can move to one of our standard Broadband packages. Or, if you are already on an Essentials Home Phone package, you can move to one of our "non-Essentials" Home Phone packages. Alternatively, you can leave without early termination charges. We’ll contact you with your options before your contract ends. If no action is taken, the price will increase to the standard out-of-contract price for your package that is listed in our Price List at that time.

Can I get faster speeds or upgrade to Full Fibre?

Unfortunately, we don’t offer faster average download speeds* than 38 Mbps on Essentials Broadband. However, you can check out our other broadband plans to see if they’re more suitable for your needs. Please see our website and Price List for more details.

Important Information

△Your monthly charges may increase on or after 1 April in each year from 2024 by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation plus up to 3%. This will only affect the Package Price of your Essentials Service after the 12 month Minimum Period. However the price of any additional services you have chosen such as calls, optional call plans or Optional Features may increase in this way irrespective of whether or not you are within the 12 month Minimum Period.

At the end of your Minimum Period, your contract will not automatically renew. At that time, you may choose to switch to any of our available packages, apply again for Essentials, or end your contract but if you do nothing, your service will continue at the Standard Monthly Charge on the terms applicable at that time.
