The energy regulator Ofgem has introduced Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) as part of their work to help the UK electricity network become more efficient.
What does settlement mean?
Like all energy suppliers, we buy electricity in 30-minute intervals for their customers. So if customers’ smart meters send readings every half hour, we get better insights into when energy is being used. This helps match supply to demand - a process known as settlement - more accurately.
How does it affect me?
Under MHHS, you’ll be automatically opted in to half-hourly settlement if you’ve done any of the following since November 2022:
- Joined us
- Moved into a Shell Energy-supplied property
- Changed tariff with a smart meter
- Had a new smart meter installed
By 2026, your energy use information will be used to help balance the UK’s energy flow, helping to make the electricity network become more efficient and cheaper to run.
You can choose to opt out, but staying opted in could help lower bills for customers in the longer term.
You can opt out by changing your preferences in My Account, or call us on 0330 094 5800. Lines are open from 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 4pm on Saturday.
Do I need to do anything?
You don’t have to do anything unless you’d prefer to opt out. Your meter will work the same and you won't notice the difference
Your energy use information will be collected in the background, and you can opt out at any time.
We'll always keep your data secure and confidential, and won't use it for any other purpose without your permission. Learn more about how we use and protect your data.
