You may have heard that you can save money by sending us a meter reading the day before the price of energy changes. But only some customers need to do this.

If you have a smart meter, you don’t need to send us a meter reading – your smart meter sends them automatically.

If you’re on a fixed tariff, you don’t need to send a meter reading before a price cap change as your energy costs are fixed until your contract ends.

If you have a prepayment meter, there’s no need to do anything. The next time you top up, you’ll be buying energy at the new price.

If you’re on a flexible (standard variable) tariff and have a traditional meter, It’s a good idea to take a meter reading the day before the price of energy changes. This will make sure your bill is as accurate as possible.

There’s no need to send your readings right away. Our website and call centres are likely to be extremely busy the day before any price cap change, so the wait may be much longer than usual.

If you’re using My Account or our app, you have up to 30 days to send us your meter readings, so there’s no rush.

When should I send my meter readings?

We recommend taking a photo of your meter readings and sending them the following week. This will help us keep your bills accurate.

Please make a note of the date you took your reading.

How do I send my meter readings?

There’s no need to call us. You can send your reading in My Account or on the Shell Energy app.

This is the most convenient way to share your meter readings with us, and allows you to send them up to 30 days later.
